Melbourne traditionally had a poor record at Glenferrie Oval, so even though they were still fighting for the top four it was no real surprise when they were humiliated against the only team which - until then - hadn't won a match for the season.

They were given plenty of chances courtesy of Donald Cordner dominating in the ruck, but solid work by Hawthorn's defence kept them at bay. Melbourne got the first goal, and two in a row after Hawthorn had equalised but the home side had all the play at the end of the quarter to open a seven point lead.

The Demons were well held by the opposition backline again in the second quarter, and they were held without a goal. Once they'd fruitlessly attacked at the start Hawthorn took over and opened a 32 point lead by half time. Dick Kennedy was introduced in the third quarter and sent to full-forward where he kicked the opening goal of the half but Hawthorn responded quickly.

Melbourne made a comeback in the third and cut the gap to six points. Rodda could have made the game level but missed, and Hawthorn kicked the last goal of the term to make the margin 10 at the last change. They took the lead midway through the last quarter but then stopped still, allowing the home side to boot three late goals and register a breakthrough victory.

Best were McGrath, D. Cordner and T. Cordner. 19th and 20th men were Bowman and D. Kennedy. Daly (flu) was a late withdrawal, replaced by Porter.
