Mark of the Year nomination - Jeremy Howe

Melbourne's third goalless first quarter of the season allowed St Kilda to get the jump in a rare home game at the MCG. Four goals in the first ten minutes gave them what would prove a match winning advantage, even after they slowed to a crawl when superstar Nick Riewoldt was injured.

Melbourne dominated the second quarter, but without a functioning forward line it took them more than ten minutes to kick their first goal and they only narrowly won the quarter.

Two goals at the start of the third brought the margin back to under a goal, but then St Kilda exploded and by three-quarter time the margin was 50.

With the Saints switching off in the fourth quarter Melbourne registered eight goals in their best quarter of the year, but the damage had already been done.

Best were Grimes, Blease, and Macdonald.

Matthew Bate was a late replacement for James Frawley. James Magner replaced Brent Moloney at three-quarter time. It would ultimately be Moloney's last game for Melbourne.
