Having rescued their poor start to the season with a great middle of the year, Melbourne's chances of making the finals were rocked by a loss at home to the Eagles. The loss left them needing to win their last two games to have any chance.
Despite gathering 94 fewer possessions the Eagles never looked like losing, and on several occasions Melbourne used their extra touches to commit terrible skill errors which led directly to Eagles goals.
West Coast took a 35 point lead at the first change, and while Melbourne battled back to be just 14 points down in the third term they couldn't get any closer. In the last quarter Peter Matera put an exclamation mark on the result by intercepting a poor Andy Lovell kick towards Brett Lovett and kicking another goal.
Best were M. Febey, B. Lovett and Stynes. Sean Wight was replaced in the selected side by Peter Rohde due to a knee injury.
