Having rescued their poor start to the season with a great run in the middle of the year, Melbourne's chances of making the finals were rocked by a loss at home to the Eagles. Defeat left them needing to win their last two games to have any chance.
Despite gathering 94 fewer possessions the Eagles never looked like losing. Melbourne often used their extra touches to commit terrible skill errors which led directly to Eagles goals. They were 35 points down at the first change, but battled to be back to 14 points behind in the third quarter. They didn't get any closer. The margin was back to 18 in the final term before two quick Eagles goals put the result beyond doubt. Peter Matera added an exclamation mark on the result by intercepting a poor Andy Lovell kick towards Brett Lovett and kicking another goal.
Best were M. Febey, B. Lovett and Stynes. Sean Wight was replaced in the selected side by Peter Rohde due to a knee injury. Neil Balme said "We made too many mistakes. The good sides finish they way they finished, the bad sides finish the way we finished".
