John Filomeno "Percy" Rodriguez was born in Broome, with a Spanish/Phillipino father. After showing encouraging signs while playing with Perth he met former VFL player Harry Cordner who convinced him to try his luck on the east coast. Rodriguez crossed to Victoria where he attended Xavier College, but as he was too old to play school football he coached in his first year before joining University.
Rodriguez played 17 games in his first season, but the University club were on their last legs and wound up at the end of the year. Along with a number of his teammates Percy joined Melbourne and debuted early in 1915.
He played just five games before returning to Perth to enlist in the army. While he was there Rodriguez managed to turn out for Perth again before leaving to fight in World War I as part of the 23 Battalion of the AIF in March 1916. Almost a year later to the day he was killed during fighting at The Somme.
