A heavy defeat against Sydney a week earlier had left the Demons on the pack chasing for the last spots in the eight. With the season starting to wind down they were now two wins and 12% behind 8th placed Carlton.

At a very minimum they needed to beat the in-form Tigers - themselves now only a game behind Carlton - in perfect conditions under lights on Friday night. After taking the lead in the first quarter the Demons conceded five goals to one in the second and never recovered.

Richmond won their fourth in five to jump into the eight, while Melbourne remained the worst of three sides two games outside the finals.

Best were Kowal, Ward and Viney.
