The match was played as nearly a dead rubber three weeks out from the end of the season. Carlton were too far away from the finals and Melbourne playing only for the hope of jumping over Hawthorn and Footscray into the lofty heights of 9th place.
By quarter time the Blues had reduced the last three quarters to a dead rubber by opening up a 35 point lead. To their credit the Demons struck back in the second with quick ball movements and thanks to three goals to Barry Bourke and two to Graham Osborne they cut the margin to 17, but then as they so often had that year the visitors put on a goalless third quarter and allowed Carlton to skip away again.
On a muddy day at Princes Park, Ken Emselle was unlucky not to have a goal in the last quarter his snap shot bounced and rolled towards the goal only to stop dead in the mire just short of the line where a Blue defender toe poked it through for a rushed behind.
Best were Rowe, Massey and Leahy. No replacements were made.
