Paul Salmon's 300th game brought two potential finalists together on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the MCG, and despite the festivities surrounding Salmon's milestone it was the Demons who ran out easy winners.

The Hawks led by 21 points at the 12 minute mark of the second term, but from then on Melbourne - led by seven goals from Jeff Farmer - crashed the party. A desperate Demon outfit continually chased and harassed the Hawks out of the ball and allowed them to kick 19 goals to four from that point.

Farmer's performance was only the third time a Demon had kicked seven goals against Hawthorn since the end of World War 2. Kelvin Templeton had 8 in Round 3, 1984, and Allen Jakovich 8 in his last game for the club in Round 17, 1994. It was Melbourne's biggest win over Hawthorn since Round 13, 1966.

Farmer, Yze (29 touches), Rigoni (who beat Shane Crawford comfortably) and Steve Febey were best for the Dees as they got their season well and truly back on target after a mid-season slump. Andrew Leoncelli suffered concussion.

Neale Daniher said "It was really important that we responded to those two bad losses against Carlton and the Bulldogs. It has been a real test for our club and we have come out of the trough with our form in the last couple of weeks."
