A week before the Bulldogs had won their second match of the year against minor premiership contender Hawthorn. Their only other win had been against the Demons so confidence in their camp was high. However the Demons had flogged Geelong by more than ten goals so they weren't short on self-belief either.
In a see-sawing game neither side could break away, trading the lead at the first three changes before the Demons turned for home three points ahead. The only mini-break of the day was in the third quarter when Melbourne were as much as 33 in front before conceding a string of late goals.
A Simon Beasley goal levelled scores 16 minutes into the last quarter, before Brian Wilson grabbed the lead back after a pair of running bounces. The Dogs were in front again shortly after, before Chris Connolly kicked the winning goal. For the last seven minutes Melbourne grimly held on to their narrow lead and registered a third consecutive victory.
Best were Johnson, O'Sullivan and Battiston. Gaunt suffered a bruised calf.
