The midfielder/forward didn't play a senior game in his first season, not making it past Night Series matches after battling stress fractures. He debuted with four games in 1990, winning Melbourne's Reserves best and fairest and the competition-wide Gardiner Medal. He played a further five games in 1991.
Keogh's best season was 1992, playing 13 games for four Brownlow Medal votes. Despite this, he failed to play a senior game in 1992. That year he took home his second Gardiner Medal, then transferred to St Kilda for 1994.
Keogh spent five years with the Saints, playing in their losing 1997 Grand Final team. In addition to 82 senior games across two clubs, he played in the Reserves over 100 times.
A knee injury forced Keogh's AFL retirement in 1998. He played with Hampton Park in 1999 and captain/coached Devon Meadows in 2000 and 2001, before taking up a player/coach role with North Launceston from 2002 to 2006. He coached Castlemaine in 2012 and 2013.
His uncle Trevor Keogh played 208 games for Carlton.
