The ruckman had trialled with the Demons in 1951, but didn't make the list. The club saw something in him, though, and would invite him back to train every year from then on.

After playing for Ormond in '51, Fenton-Smith moved to Brisbane and played there for two years. He returned to Melbourne in 1954 and rejoined Ormond, spending three years there and captaining the side in 1956. After playing against luminaries like Denis Cordner in a VAFA vs combined VFA/VFL amateur 1956 Olympics exhibition match he decided to give VFL football another shot.

1959 was Fenton-Smith's last season. He missed three games while recovering from a ruptured lung suffered in a car accident, and in the week before the start of the finals series was transferred to Adelaide as part of his employment. He flew back to Melbourne specifically for the finals and won his second premiership before joining SANFL side Sturt. He had been pursued by six Adelaide clubs, and North Adelaide had offered him a playing/coach role.

He later returned to serve on the Melbourne committee.
