A midfielder brought to Victoria by Essendon in 1953, after two consecutive Northern Tasmanian best and fairest awards, Byrne returned home without winning a clearance. He instead signed by the Demons the next year when Essendon's hold on him ran out. Byrne then took up a £25 a week offer to coach NSW side Corowa.

In 1957 he was invited to Melbourne training after an accidental meeting with secretary Jim Cardwell where he said that he regretted moving to the country and was keen for another try at the league. He played in the first game but it was his only VFL match.

As he started as one of Melbourne's reserves and is not recorded as having been used as a replacement during the game he may never have fully participated in a league match. He then walked out on the club and returned to Mangoplah where he'd coached the season before.
