Via a stint with the Collingwood Reserves in 1982, the highest-numbered player ever to take the field for Melbourne (one-off commemorative appearances aside) made a bright debut as 24-year-old in late 1986 with 23 touches in a big loss against the Hawks at Waverley. A week later he managed just five in a 124 point loss at the SCG and never played seniors again.

Dale returned to Eltham in 1987 and was coach in 1988 before being replaced by ex-teammate Peter Moore in 1989. He captained the side in 1990.

His son Frazer debuted for Carlton in 2012 but was delisted at the end of 2013.
