September 16 - Warehouseman's Ground
Melbourne 0.3, 2.6, 5.8, 8.10
Carlton 1.1, 1.1, 1.4, 3.7
Goalkickers: Roche 5, Moysey 2, O'Loughlin 1
Melbourne easily won a vigourous, and at times rough, match against their old enemies. Poor kicking cost them early, and allowed the Blues to go into the first change in front. The home side missed more chances in the second term but kept Carlton scoreless and added two goals of their own to take the lead.
They finally ran away with the game in the third quarter, kicking three goals without reply and taking an almost unbeatable lead into the last quarter.
Melbourne's win came despite the absence of G. Sheahan, Smith and Toms from the selected side. Best was Roche, who had one goal of his five which was described as the 'best of the season', along with the long kicking O'Dea, Christy, Moysey and O'Loughlin.
The victory left Melbourne a win and a draw in front of South Melbourne in second, but too far away from Essendon to make a serious assault on the league with two games remaining.
best were Healing, O'Dea and Roche.
