September 1889 match vs St Kilda

Saturday 28 September - Friendly Societies' Ground

Melbourne 1.1, 1.5, 1.6, 2.9
St Kilda 2.4, 2.8, 3.11, 3.11

St Kilda win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: Hallett 1, Mitchell 1

St Kilda arrived with a weakened side and several substitutes. They were still one player short at the start, and after conceding the first goal into the wind it looked like they might be overwhelmed. The visitors struck back to score twice late in the quarter and take the lead. Neither side goalled in the second quarter, with Melbourne's turn to use the breeze blocked by strong defence.

With their absent player taking the field after half time, St Kilda again held Melbourne goalless and got the only major of the third quarter. With the wind in their favour in the final term, Melbourne repeatedly attacked but could only manage one more goal.
