September 1882 match 1 vs Carlton

Saturday 2 September - Melbourne Ground
Crowd: 10,000

Melbourne 3.9
Carlton 3.13 (half time 2.4-3.6)

Match drawn

Goalkickers: H. Power 1, McDonald 1, McKenzie 1

A match which had been postponed a fortnight earlier due to Carlton disputing a suspension against one of their players by the VFA was finally played and it attracted the largest crowd of the season.

The visitors made up for lost time with two goals in a row to start the game. The early goals encouraged Melbourne to put up a better fight, and immediately after Thewlis missed an easy chance, H. Power emerged from a scrimmage with the ball, stepped around an opponent and scored first for the reds.

They could have had another through Ulbrick not long after but after a run that nearly went the length of the ground his kicked narrowly missed the goal. Eventually McDonald levelled the scores, but shortly before half time Carlton took the lead again through a lucky goal which rolled through from a difficult angle.

During the first half both teams lost a player, with Sloman of Melbourne and Carlton's J. Robertson crashing into each other in a contest and having to retire from the game.

On the resumption for the second half Melbourne had several shots on goal before eventually equalising through McKenzie. No more scores were had for the day.

Best were Longden, Rannard and McDonald.

Notes
The Australasian suggests Carlton took on the fixture after East Melbourne folded.
