DOB: Unknown
Board member in 1985 who joined the "reform" group trying to oust Billy Snedden as president. He cited a lack of communication from the board while he was interstate for convincing him to join the rebels.
He convened an Extraordinary General Meeting on 12 September that year to try and change the club's Articles of Association and change the membership criteria so that four members of the prospective rebel board could become directors if his second intention - to oust the incumbents - was successful. The incumbent board asked him to resign but he refused.
The EGM was abandoned and replaced with a 'protest meeting' at the Camberwell Civic Centre which the rebel group then went on to brand as an EGM anyway against legal advice.
The incumbent board agreed to resign so that members could choose their board from scratch at the AGM. Benkel did not contest the elections and returned to his work as a barrister.
