Goalkickers: Vin Coutie 1, Jack Leith 1, Dan Moriarty 1

Milestones:

The sides managed to put on a fast and open game despite playing on a poor standard ground due to recent wet weather. The early play was chaotic as players came to grips with the conditions and decided to start kicking the ball along the round rather than picking it up.

Despite not playing noticeably better Fitzroy managed to kick two goals to nil in the first quarter, but after quarter time Melbourne had the better of the scoring even if they were still the inferior side. The game remained close in the second half but Melbourne never managed to get in front, and they were two points behind with the locals kicked a goal seconds before the bell to seal the result.

Best were Purse, Herring and Bremner.
