While the final score showed that Melbourne got reasonably close to the Maroons, the reality was that Fitzroy's win came with little exertion after the first quarter.

Melbourne tried hard, and were saved by both their defenders and Fitzroy's poor kicking for goal, but after the first break Fitzroy were clearly the better side. The sides had kicked a combined 2.10 between them in the first term, falling victim to a wind blowing across the ground. The home side started the second term with the intention of crowding the game, and for five minutes the ball was trapped in the middle of the ground going from wing to wing for five minutes at one point. Eventually Fitzroy took control and added 21 points for the quarter to take a six point lead into half time. The wind continued to play havoc with goalkicking, the sides combining for 4.20 in the first two quarters.

The Reds put up some resistance in the first few minutes of the third term, and took the lead thanks to a goal from Brereton, but Fitzroy quickly bounced back and their superior marking carried them to an easy victory. Two late goals made the margin more respectable.

Pearce, Odgers and Monk were best.
