Just four Demons impressed in a limp loss to the Bulldogs. Greg Parke, Graham Molloy, Ross Dillon and Frank Davis stood out in a team that was pathetic, but in spite of itself still led ten minutes into the last term.
Taking advantage of scoring opportunities better than their opposition was what had kept Melbourne in front despite a disappointing performance. In an eighteen minute burst during the third quarter after Footscray skipper Stuart Magee was carried off with a knee injury the Demons booted four goals, two to Molloy.
The last quarter, however, afforded them very few chances up front and they failed to score. The Bulldogs reeled a 2 point deficit in easily and went on to win in a canter.
Best were Parke, Molloy and Dillon. Letcher (strained knee) was replaced in the second quarter and Rollinson (sprained ankle) in the third quarter. Keenan suffered a bruised hip.
