The massive turnover of players in Melbourne's comeback season continued with three more debutants, including two who were cleared just that week and one who would only play one match.

A disappointing season continued with the sixth straight loss, and after recovering from conceding a goal within 20 seconds to be just two goals down at the first change the Reds only kicked three more goals for the match.

Their forward line had been a problem all year, and it hampered the Fuschias again. The Maroons had no such trouble at the other end with Bob Merrick kicking eight of their 11 goals. They kept Fitzroy at bay for a large period of the second quarter but couldn't kick any goals.

As with the previous week it was a third term that put Melbourne away, and with Fitzroy lifting their game and playing at their best the winless side couldn't go with them. Despite the margin Melbourne fought out the match until the end but they were clearly second best on the day in all aspects other than the ruck.

Bill Allen returned to his best in the ruck and was ably assisted by Bacquie and Matthews. Haines, Walker and Lilley were also amongst the best.
