After getting their second win for the season a week earlier, Melbourne almost got another but had to settle for the first draw of the 1901 VFL season.

In a game that was fast but not necessarily skilful the two clubs played out a thriller. Both terms were missing important players - with Melbourne doing without the Gardners or Rippon. Fitzroy started slowly, feeling the effect of a tough game against Collingwood a few days earlier, but managed to keep the margin to seven points at the half.

The visitors led by two points at the last change, and with seven minutes to go the scores were level. Melbourne went for the win but couldn't get the ball past Fitzroy's strong defenders, and they turned the Reds back on numerous occasions. At one point it looked like McGinis was going to win the game for his team, but a flying shot just drifted wide of the behind post and out of bounds.

Best were Moodie, Cumberland and McGinis.
