After starting the year with two wins the Demons had crashed to three straight losses. A clash with the Pies who had won just one game and had just seen their coach, president and most of the board resign would have been the perfect opportunity to get the season back on track.
On return from a serious knee injury Peter Daicos kicked two first quarter goals, helping his side to a 21 point lead at the first break. Melbourne had been in front midway through the quarter before the Pies made their move.
It didn't get much better for Melbourne in the second quarter, and desperate to spark his side at half-time, Northey moved Peter Moore to centre half-forward and Garry Lyon to full forward. The moves worked, but the holes they left elsewhere were exploited by the Pies and they extended their lead at the last change.
Danny Hughes had been beaten comfortably by Brian Taylor in the first quarter, but Paul Payne was more successful on him after that. Taylor was restricted to five goals for the day.
Melbourne narrowly won the last quarter but the damage was done. It was just round 6 but already John Northey declared his side's performance their worst yet.
Best were Flower, Lyon and Grinter. Alan Johnson tore a calf muscle.
