Nicknamed 'Rhino', Richards was a powerfully built, but quick, utility represented Melbourne four times in the Grand Final Sprint. He finished 3rd in 1984 and 1985 before winning in 1987. It was his last official engagement as a Melbourne player, he remained on the list until the end of 1988 before being delisted.
Played for Prahran in 1989 before retiring.
