In windy conditions the Demons earned their fifth narrow win of six for the season, but more importantly their second in a row against a genuine premiership contender. The Pies weren't at top strength, with a number of changes from the week before.
Having been to Geelong the week before and come away with the points they matched up against the old enemy in front of a disappointing crowd and again had to grind out
The defence was where the Demons stood up, continually rebuffing Collingwood attacks. Tassie Johnson was his side's brilliant best down back. Unfortunately for Melbourne down at the other end the Magpies were doing some stoic defending of their own.
It took twenty minutes for the first and only goal of the opening quarter to come from a Bryan Kenneally free kick, but two quick goals in the second term gave Collingwood the lead. Scores were level at half time but the extra experience of the Demon side, against a Collingwood lineup which had been dramatically resculpted from the Grand Final helped them to an 11 point lead at the last break. The Magpies struck back but fell just short.
Best were Johnson, Mann and Wise. No replacements were used. Mann bruised his thigh and Bourke bruised his ankle.
