After a disappointing opening three weeks of the season, another win firmly entrenched Melbourne in the top four. Their dominant defence, and a deadly forward combination of Arnold and Smith carried them to a big win. The backmen had a difficult start, with South grabbing an early lead. At the other end the forwards were unable to break through.

South remained in control at the start of the second term, but Melbourne soon overhauled them with three goals in three minutes. The home side rallied to hold a seven point lead at half time.

Melbourne were again prominent at the start of the new quarter, kicking two goals to grab back the advantage. Now their defence were in charge and the margin extended to 20 points. South had been kept scoreless for the quarter and it took them until late in the last quarter for them to kick a pair of consolation goals.

Six goals in a row opened up a significant lead for the Demons and they won comfortably.

Deans, Rodda and Dockett were best. O'Rourke and Bowman were unused 19th and 20th men.
