A week after getting their season back on track with a win over the previously unbeaten Magpies, Melbourne had to struggle to win at a ground which had unsettled them so many times in the past.
Melbourne were poor all day, fumbling and kicking badly. Until the ten minute mark of the last quarter Hawthorn looked likely winners, but Melbourne rallied to hold the Mayblooms at bay.
Even after three wins in a row the victory left the Demons outside the top four on percentages.
McGrath, Fanning and Mitchell were best.
