Having served notice that they were a genuine finals contender with two wins out of the first three matches, Melbourne were brought back to earth by the Magpies who won comfortably after an even first quarter.

Rain had fallen since Thursday, softening the turf, then a downpour soaked the ground on Saturday morning and made the going heavy. The home side played the conditions much better, restricting Melbourne to just three goals after quarter time. The visitors had the wind in the first term, but it soon became clear that Collingwood were the better side and handled the wet ball better while displaying superior teamwork.

McKenzie got both of Melbourne's goals in the first quarter, but they went in behind and could have been even further back in the Pies hadn't missed several shots on goal. In the second quarter their forward line failed them, as in a slow and crowded game they got the ball enough but couldn't convert. A controversial goal to Collingwood late in the quarter which was clearly touched by George was paid by the umpires and helped them open up a three goal lead.

Evans was Melbourne's best, but the usually reliable Lilley was beaten comfortably by McHale in the first half before moving to the half-back line in the second half where he began to redeem himself. Jack McKenzie was also prominent.
