Melbourne's poor start to the season continued, but the Maroons were in top form. With Vin Coutie absent Melbourne kicked the first goal of the game but only added two more for the whole match. Fitzroy kicked the next ten after conceding the opening goal and the match was over.
Two more Fitzroy goals in the third quarter extended the margin even further before Horrie Drane kicked Melbourne's second for the day. In the last quarter, with the ball become slippery and light rapidly fading both sides played a listless last quarter.
Langley, McClelland and Strong were best.
