St Kilda moved to top spot on the ladder with a big win over the Demons, set up by Jason Heatley kicking five goals in the first term. St Kilda kicked a total of seven goals in the first quarter to just one and the match was over.
It didn't help Melbourne's cause that Shaun Smith (knee), Andrew Lamprill (shoulder) and Glenn Lovett (collarbone) were all lost during the match and by the end of the match they had less than 18 fit players. Jeff Farmer also injured his hamstring.
Best were Hopgood, Stynes and Robertson.
