Melbourne's flagging finals chances took another blow, with a high-scoring home loss to an Adelaide side that had disappointed during 1995. The fourth consecutive defeat left eighth place vulnerable to Collingwood, Brisbane and Sydney. Results for the rest of the weekend meant their last game against the Bears would decide eighth place.
The night started positively, with the home side leading by three goals at the first change, led by David Neitz at centre half-forward, before the Crows piled on 11 goals to four in the second quarter. They added another seven to three in the third quarter as Melbourne's backline capitulated.
An angry Neil Balme said "We played a pox style of game tonight. A losing style. They ran forward in waves but we couldn't get the ball off them".
Best were Neitz, Lovell and Tingay. Jeff Hilton suffered a suspected broken foot, Steven Febey an AC joint injury, and Stephen Tingay a suspected broken leg.
