With their finals chances officially over, Melbourne played with freedom in a tricky breeze and opened a 33 point quarter time lead. Steven Febey had ten touches in the first term, and Ross Funcke played his best quarter for the Demons with eight disposals. They were never challenged again, despite splitting 12 goals with the Swans in the second quarter. Sydney reduced the margin to 14 points at one stage but could get no closer. Jeff Farmer kicked three of his five goals in the last quarter with the game on the line, while David Neitz booted 4.7 for the afternoon.
Best were Neitz, Farmer and Febey.
