The match was played three days after the suicide of Melbourne player Dan Moriarty, and as expected the best team in the competition found no problems against the second worst.
Six goals to one in the first quarter won the game for the Magpies, and Melbourne could do better with the wind in the second than to score the same as Collingwood. With nothing to play for and finals to preserve themselves in advance of the home side slackened off in the second half and could have won by far more.
Best were Mills, Strong and L. Anderson.
