The Demons entered the game in the strange role of being the 'form team' against a side who had barely lost a game in two years.
Consecutive wins against West Coast and Port Adelaide - the first under Dean Bailey's reign as coach - had given Melbourne a boost, but with some of the best players in the competition returning for the Cats they were always going to be hard to beat coming off two losses.
With the coin toss to decide who would kick with a howling gale in the first quarter, Geelong's Cameron Ling won and the Cats were on their way.
Seven goals straight in the first quarter put the game beyond doubt, and even though the Demons won the scoring after quarter time they were already well out of the game.
Best were Moloney, Bate and Morton.
Jamie Bennell was a late replacement for Paul Wheatley.
