After eight wins in their last nine games had rescued Melbourne's season, the Demons failed to consolidate their position inside the eight, with a month of difficult games on the horizon. The difference in the two forward lines saw Garry Lyon kick 1.5 and Gary Ablett 6.9. It left Ablett three goals short of his century. His first miss came 10 seconds into the first quarter when a kick off the ground rolled wide, and he continued to trouble Sean Wight all day.
Despite Princes Park cramping Melbourne's uncontested style and forcing turnovers, a three goal to nil third quarter reduced the margin to 25 points. David Neitz was playing a lone hand up front and it got as close as 22 points in the last quarter before a Darren Kowal kicked intended for Jeff Hilton was cut off, leading to the sealing goal.
Best were Neitz, Viney and G. Lovett. Matthew Febey injured his calf in the warmup and was unable to take his place. Neil Balme was critical of the Princes Park home game, saying "I don't know why we have to play here. I don't know what relationship we've got with Princes Park. You would expect the Melbourne Football Club to play at the MCG, but maybe that is too much to expect".
