With just two wins on the board Melbourne were never likely to challenge finals aspirants North, but when they took a lead of almost four goals into the first change even the paltry crowd at Arden Street had to sit up and take notice. Kicking into the wind North were kept scoreless until the 25 minute mark.
North recovered to take the lead at half-time and extend their margin at three-quarter time before running away with the game in the final term. The Demons were outscored in the third despite the use of the wind but North made no such mistake and slammed on eight goals to one in the last quarter.
Amongst Doug Wade's seven goals was the one that took him to second on the all-time goalkicking ladder.
Best were Giampaolo, Wells and Baker. Chamberlain and Collins were unused reserves.
