Selectors wielded the axe with eight changes, only two compulsory, after the loss to Fitzroy and the Demons responded with a first half worthy of their clashes with the Magpies in the past.
Collingwood sat on top of the VFL ladder and the Demons just two games off last, but if it hadn't been for poor goalkicking Melbourne could have been even further than 12 points in front at the long break. Lightning fast handball was leaving the Magpies behind but wretched kicking for goal kept them from opening up a match winning lead. Nevertheless the members gave the Demons players a standing ovation coming off the ground.
After half time, though, it was a different story. The pacy play which had bought Collingwood to it's knees suddenly slowed to a crawl and only Graham Molloy continued his good form from the first two quarters. Even with Peter McKenna well held by Max Walker the Magpies had enough options to overcome Melbourne's score by three-quarter time and hold on to win.
Best were Molloy, Davis and Parke. Colcott was replaced by Carr at three quarter time and Forster by Rollinson in the last quarter. Sullivan suffered a cut shin.
