In a fiery match the Demons continued to work towards a spot in the top four with a huge win over their traditional rivals. Collingwood was well down on their late 50s aura but despite a crowd well down on normal after they'd lost five in a row, it had some familiar aggression. Centre of the action was Pie Wayne Weideman who fought with Frank Adams, Kerry Rattray, Hassa Mann and Tony Anderson throughout the day, but to no avail in the end

Despite losing the toss, the Demons kicked with the wind in the first quarter. They opened with the only four goals of the term, kicking 4.7 to Collingwood's two behinds. Now with the aid of the wind, the Pies quickly slashed the margin with four goals in 12 minutes, then added another two to take a handy lead. A late Kerry Rattray goal dragged the margin back under six points.

Melbourne came out of the sheds full of intent to build a lead that would withstand the wind in the final term. Ron Barassi snapped a goal from 60 yards to open the quarter, and Hassa Mann added another shortly after. Collingwood fought back, but the Demons extended the gap to 15 points. Then any Collingwood plan to come home with the wind fell apart when it dropped for the last quarter and a half. The Pies reduced the lead to eight points at the last change but while they hung on bravely at the start of the term, they couldn't stop Melbourne running riot with 10 goals to two.

Both sides slowed down in the third, and the game was finely poised going into the last term before Melbourne unleashed and took advantage of their tiring opponents with a ten goal fourth quarter to register a ten goal victory.

Best were Massey, Mann and Barassi. Anderson replaced Miller at half time, and Matthews replaced Townsend in the last quarter.

Despite the huge victory - and the best percentage in the league by 12.5% - the third placed Demons could still miss out if they dropped a game on fourth placed St Kilda over the last two weeks of the season.
