The last chance for the Demons to stay in the running for the top four was ruined by their sixth straight loss. Melbourne were the better side for three quarters against fellow top four contenders Richmond, but with a 15 point lead at the last change they got stage fright and allowed the Tigers to boot seven goals in the final term to win.
Neither side had managed a goal in the third quarter, but Richmond kicked the first four of the last term to take the lead. Melbourne kicked the next two but ran out of gas and allowed the Tigers to overtake them again. Three goals in a row from Jack Dyer were crucial.
McGrath, Cordner and Lock were best. It was the sixth time in eight losses that the margin had been under 10 points.
