Having consolidated their spot at the top of the ladder, the Demons returned from the Lightning Premiership break but suffered a shock loss. They had the advantage with high marking and strength in the packs, but Carlton's pace and quick play-on methods won out.
Early both sides found the opposition defence hard to penetrate, before Carlton kicked three goals in a row. They could have had more but spoilt chances with bad kicking for goal. Melbourne managed to claw their way back into the game with two goals, and they were within one straight kick before the Blues goalled on the siren to extend their lead to eight points.
They added another four straight goals at the start of the second quarter to increase their lead, and they were as much as 44 points in front before two late goals gave the Demons some hope.
In their last two matches the Demons had given up huge leads to their opponents before running them down, so nobody wrote them off but they couldn't repeat the dose. They reduced the margin to 26 at three-quarter time but lost the last quarter by 11 points and went down to their biggest defeat of the year. Fortunately for Melbourne the loss of Geelong elsewhere left them a game clear at the top of the ladder.
Mueller, Rodda and Emselle were Melbourne's best. McLean was 19th man.
