Having just earned their fourth win of the season the Redlegs had almost certaintly avoided the wooden spoon, but they couldn't get the better of a Geelong side which had George Moloney booting 10 goals. During his day out Moloney also passed the all time record goals total for a Geelong player in a season. He also kicked 10 behinds.
Other than Moloney's performance the quality of the game - watched by the lowest crowd in Corio Oval history - was ruined by high winds and heavy rains which lashed the ground in the second and fourth quarters.
The game was over at half time, and to the visitor's credit they only narrowly lost the second half. Melbourne's only win for the day was in the air, but they were beaten elsewhere around the ground and were wasteful in attack.
Part of the reason Melbourne were able to come back was Geelong's concentration on 'feeding' Moloney to try and raise his goal tally.
Best were Vine, Beames and Davidson. Bill Adams suffered a hip injury in the last quarter and was replaced by Wyn Murray.
