Melbourne's disappointing season got worst with a comfortable loss in which they failed to score in either the first or fourth quarters.

South were one of the red hot premiership favourites but it didn't excuse the terrible performance which would have led to an even bigger margin if the Southerners had converted better from 23 scoring shots.

High winds hurt the visitors goalkicking but it also played havoc with Melbourne's general play. Even the winds couldn't be blamed for the blushes of Alf George who ran into an open goal in the second quarter and missed.

Only in the third quarter did Melbourne show any fight, using their handball to put the visitors on the back foot but they still went further behind before failing to add a point in the last term.

Best were Tomkins, McKenzie and Lilley.
