The locals kicked with the wind in the first quarter, but only managed two goals to one as the Pies put up stout resistance and had twice as many scoring shots. Collingwood had the first three behinds before Brereton kicked the opening two goals of the game. The visitors got a late goal to stay close, then pulled away with four goals to one in the second as rain turned the game into a slippery affair.
In the third quarter Collingwood again attacked continually, but were inaccurate and scored just 0.5. Melbourne got one straight goal to remain within striking distance.
Best was Kennedy.
