Neither team had a chance of making the finals but a respectable crowd still turned up in anticipation of a good game on a ground not severely affected by recent wet weather.

University had the best of the early play but only registered three points. Melbourne had the advantage of the wind but were lucky to escape with just a six point deficit as their opposition were dominant. They bounced back immediately at the start of the second, with Strong kicking a goal, and another followed by the end of the quarter to take the lead.

The game ended in controversy, with the Students protesting about an incident at the end of the third quarter. They kicked a goal as signalled by the goal umpire, but which was disallowed by the field umpire.

Frank Harris was reported for striking, Captain Bernie Nolan defended Harris and argued that while contact had been made it was unintentional but he was suspended for seven matches.

McBean was injured and off the ground for a large part of the second half after a collision with an opponent. Nolan hurt his collarbone and Mills his shoulder.

Notes
Harris is reported to have been stood down until 30 June 1910 which actually equals 12 games out.

Herald says Fred Hewitt kicked first goal then leaves him out of the goalkickers.
