St Kilda were the worst side in the competition, but they started the game like they were far superior to their hosts. Their clever football suggested that they'd take the game right down to the wire, but they overused handball throughout the match to their own detriment.
In slippery conditions the game was still in the balance at half time with Melbourne just 10 points in front before the Reds put on a sudden dramatic improvement, kicked nine goals to nil and won easily.
Best were Sowden, Coutie and Gardiner
