Already rattled by three straight losses and boardroom chaos, the Demons were further hampered by Shane Woewodin missing with an injury - ending his 107 consecutive match streak - and Guy Rigoni unable to come up either. The oddest piece of team selection on the day belonged to North coach Denis Pagan who sent the returning Wayne Carey at centre half-back to deal with David Schwarz.
With the Demons leading by two goals at quarter time the King went back up forward and kicked five goals in the second half to rescue the match for North. Adem Yze was solidly beaten by Shannon Grant and benched during the second quarter.
North had 70 inside 50s to Melbourne's 49 and if it wasn't for a strong defensive effort by Melbourne the margin might have been much worse. The loss meant that only a miracle could see the Demons qualify for the finals.
Best for Melbourne were Daniel Ward, David Schwarz and James McDonald. Steven Febey had 30 touches in his 250th game.
Neale Daniher said "There were some good signs there today, especially early, but after that it was disappointing. We just weren't clean enough in close through the midfield."
