The Tigers got their first run of three wins in a row since 1986 on a day where Melbourne had 70 more possessions but failed to make them count and dropped to 11th on the ladder with just one win in their last eight games. Less than two months before they had been clear league leaders.
Melbourne led at every change before blizzard like conditions came in the last quarter and allowed Richmond to run over the top with a three goal to none final term. The Tigers got the first goal of the quarter at the 11 minute mark and went on to win comfortably.
Garry Lyon had a horror day, kicking a goal after 17 seconds of the first quarter then being blanketed by tagger Duncan Kellaway.
Best were Viney, Tingay, Stynes. Phil Gilbert suffered a back injury.
Neil Balme said: "I thought we were a good side, but you can't be a good side and not beat anyone."
