For the second straight week the Demons suffered a heartbreaking loss. They'd been beaten in the last three minutes by North Melbourne a week before, and then another thrilling defeat from the old enemy.

A high scoring first quarter gave the Pies a narrow lead, but most of the damage was done in the first 15 minutes of the match. From then the Demons defenders held sway. At the other end the marking power of Ross Dillon and Greg Parke was keeping the Demons in the game. Collingwood extended their lead marginally at half-time before Melbourne booted five goals in the third quarter to take a lead into the final quarter.

After 30 minutes in which the lead changed five times and scores were level twice, Melbourne had a seven point margin with ten minutes left. The Pies kicked two points to bring the margin under a goal before Tony Sullivan collided with Collingwood player Con Britt and nearly knocked him out. He was lifted up, nearly motionless and not surprisingly missed his kick.

It looked like Melbourne were going to hold until, in what the newspapers referred to as a "travesty of justice", the Pies stole the game with virtually the last kick of the day. Having been thrashed by David Hone all day, John Greening had wobbled a ball through off the ground, and the moment the ball was bounced in the centre the match was over.

Best were Hone, Johnson and Dillon. Rollinson (concussion) was replaced by McKenzie at half time. Mark Mitchell was an unused reserve.
