Melbourne's ninth win in a row all but sealed their 11th straight finals performance, while simultaneously knocking North out of the running for the top four.

The game was played after days of heavy rain.

All season the Demons had been letting inferior teams stay in games until half time, and this was another example. They only led by 12 points at half time, before a seven goal to nil third quarter won the game. North ran out of legs after the break.

Rover Townsend was the best of a forward line that shared its goals.

North lost captain Allan Aylett to a broken hand in the first quarter.

Frank Davis came on a reserve and goalled with his second kick on debut but wouldn't kick another one until 1973.

Best were H. Mann, Townsend and Jacobs. Adams replaced Wise and Davis replaced Kenneally, both in the last quarter.
