Another week, and another loss for Melbourne - but another big haul for Johnson who now had 27 goals in three matches.
His forward line heroics were fine at their end of the field, but the Redlegs still had trouble defending. Again they conceded a big score, and any hope of overhauling a four goal deficit at three-quarter time evaporated when they concedd six goals to the Pivotonians in the last.
At the other end Melbourne found it hard to find an avenue to goal that didn't go through Johnson, and were continually thwarted in attack by Geelong's strong defence.
Best were Johnson, Jones and Long. Bennett sprained his ankle during the third quarter and was replaced by Deague. Beames and Kinnear suffered knee injuries.
With five rounds left to play they were left a game above last placed Essendon, but had to play them the next week.
